  • VOA Radiogram, 25-26 Oct 2014: Shortwave in the news

    The surprise mode on this weekend’s VOA Radiogram requires the newest version of Fldigi – 3.22 – which can be downloaded from http://www.w1hkj.com/download.html. The surprise mode will be transmitted during the closing music and will be centered on 1500 Hz.

    Also on this weekend’s program, a news item about a shortwave broadcasting initiative, and another about a U.S. government agency’s planned use shortwave (HF) for emergency communications.

    VOA Radiogram this weekend includes an interesting mix of VOA news stories – plus an image via RFE/RL.

    There is a surprise mode, but it will be on three different audio frequencies. So, in Fldigi: Configure > IDs > RsID – check the “Searches passband” box (at least for this weekend).

  • Decoding VOA Radiogram using a vintage receiver (Czech Republic)

    Martin in the Czech Republic decoded VOA Radiogram, program 78, 4 October 2014, 1600-1630 UTC, 17860 kHz, using audio from a Tesla Symfonic 603A receiver from 1950. The receiver uses these tubes: ECH21, EF22, EF22, EBL21, AZ11. The antenna was a modified mini-whip active antenna + unun 50 ohm to 450 ohm.

    Martin achieved a 95% decode of the text and at least one image. Photos are below…

  • VOA Radiogram, 13-14 Sept 2014: fall propagation

    As we approach autumn in the northern hemisphere, shortwave propagation is changing. The 17860 and 15670 kHz transmissions may become more difficult to hear in Europe. On the other hand, Chris in New Zealand is now receiving the 15670 kHz transmission, with a 100% decode (including the Russian) last weekend, as well as this image…
